SCHOLARSHIP

Schools in Guatemala

The Guatemalan Government provides teachers at local schools.  Families are required to pay nominal school fees, all school supplies and books, etc.  The Student scholarship fund is used for students (K-12) who are not able to attend school because their families cannot afford these school expenses.  Scholarships are given to children  live in an area where we have completed service projects, such as installing wood efficiency stoves, building medical clinics, classrooms or homes.  Students in need of a scholarship are identified by their teachers and School Director.  Parents can also contact a local Guatemalan "Project Leader" regarding their need.

The local Project Leader meets with the parents and the student at the beginning of the school  year to discuss the parental and student commitments to ensure school attendance and the use of money for school expenses.  Scholarship money is dispersed month by month to ensure the family and students are following through with their commitment.  The local "Guatemalan Coordinating Committee" oversees the School Scholarship Funds as well as receiving proposals for other types of service projects.  The "Scholarship Fund" can be used for the traditional fees, school supplies and books, and sometimes there is enough for shoes or a school sweater.

The three levels of scholarships are:

          $   75.00 for grades 1-4

          $ 100.00 for grades 5-8

          $ 150.00 for grades 9 & up

          $150.00 for grades 9 and up
